Visible Karma-Effect: Subtle Karma-Cause

Visible Karma-Effect: Subtle Karma-Cause
A wealthy businessman donates fifty thousand rupees to a charity. His friend asks him why he did so and the businessman tells him that he would not have donated a single penny had it not been for the pressure from the mayor. Now what will be the fruit of this? The donation he made is the visible karma, the rewards of which he will get in this life when people praise and admire him for his generosity. But even while people praise him for his #generosity, what is he charging within? The consequence of bhaav (inner intent) karma of, “I would not give even a single penny…,” he will experience in his next life. In his next life he will not be able to donate even a single penny! This is the subtle karma, which is the cause for the next life’s effect. The donation made in this life was an effect. Now who can understand something so subtle?

On the other hand a poor man is asked to make a contribution for the same #charity, and his response is that he has only five rupees with him, which they can have. He further tells them that he would donate five lakh rupees without any hesitation if he had that kind of money. He is#sincere about this. His donation of five rupees is the discharge of karma created in his past life, but what does he charge subtly? A karma where in his next life he will be able to donate five lakh rupees when this #karma comes into fruition.

A person may appear to be a generous donor on the outside, making a lot of donations to religious causes, and may appear to be very active in#religious activities, while on the inside he may be scheming to take money which does not rightfully belong to him.

This person’s visible action is an effect and for it he will receive #praise here in this life. He has created a new life of misery for himself for the causes, which exist within him. Donations, charitable deeds etc., are all visible karma, the benefits of which are reaped in this life. People believe that these visible #karma are the charge karma for the next life. In fact, it is the subtle karma, happening within, that are charge karma and these will come into fruition in the next life.

If a person were to steal today, his action of stealing would be the visible karma. The fruit of this karma will be there in this lifetime; he will be disgraced and punished. All visible karma are simply an #effect and there is no #cause in that which is visible. Only subtle karma, otherwise known as ‘inner intent,’ is of importance. The whole world however, strives to change the visible karma, by focusing on acts and behavior.

The #monks and #ascetics, who practice meditation and #penance etc, do so because of their effect karma. There is no cause karma in these outer acts of theirs. Their actions today is their karma effect, the fruits of which they will experience in this life when people give them credit for their penance.

What is Worry ?

When a thought goes beyond a certain level it is called a worry. Thinking has to be done up to a certain level and should not exceed its limits. What is normality in thinking? It is normal as long as it is does not distress you. Once it goes beyond that and puzzles you or troubles you, you should stop. After the limit is reached, it turns into worry. This is what I have discovered. One does not have a right to worry.  One has a right to think but when it results in worry, one should stop. An above normal thought, is called a worry. Even I do thinking, but once it gets above normal and begins to churn my stomach,Istop.

Questioner : Ordinarily if we keep a watch internally,it is a thought, but if it becomes a worry would it then be considered an entanglement?
Dadashri :When you worry, that is entanglement. Worries arise because one believes that,' I am doing all this.' That is what he believes. Worry means I am the doer of all this. This is a disease that plagues all human beings. It cannot be purged quickly. Once a habit becomes established it does not leave. It is simply not in your interest to worry. In reality things simply happen.

Questioner : It will go away once we come to you!

Dadashri :Yes, it will go away, but it will happen slowly. It does not
happen instantly.

Keep Your Things Prioritised

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.”

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”
